Review: A Duke by Default (Reluctant Royals #2) by Alyssa Cole

My Review “You’re my liege. You’re the person I’m fighting for.” Alyssa Cole delivered another sweet and heartfelt romance with A Duke by Default! She continues to be one of my go-to contemporary romance authors these days. There’s just something about her stories and her characters that speaks to me as a reader. And this book, is a great example of what this talented author can do! Portia Hobbs might be my favorite Alyssa Cole heroine to date. When she was introduced, she was a bit of a hot mess. She has a truckload of issues that made her an interesting character to me. I didn’t like her that much in A Princess in Theory but I was curious about her. And I knew that Alyssa Cole is going to do her story justice. She was done with fuckboys, and fuckbosses for that matter, no matter how sexy their accents […]

Review: Magic Slays (Kate Daniels #5) by Ilona Andrews

Review Ilona Andrews continue to impress with the fifth installment of the Kate Daniels series! Magic Slays not only upped the ante in terms of the action and the mystery but it also added a whole lot of emotional stakes. “I love you too, Kate. If you ever became hurt, I would not leave you. I’ll be there. Wherever you want‘there’ to be.”  I know you guys are tire of me saying this but this was another fantastic installment of the Kate Daniels series. There’s always a danger of a series getting stale right after the main couple of hooks up. Kate and Curran are a couple now. They’re together, and Ilona Andrews could’ve rested in their laurels but that didn’t happen. They’ve taken this series and added more meat into it. In this book, another layer of Kate’s character is exposed, right along Curran’s. Kate once again proved why […]

Review: Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels #4) by Ilona Andrews

Review “I can’t give you the white picket fence, and if I did, you’d set it on fire.” What can I say? Another amazing installment in the Kate Daniels series!!! Kate Daniels, mercenary and psuedo Knight of the order gets to meet a long lost family member. It should’ve been a happy family reunion but this is Kate Daniels we’re talking about and to say that her family is just dysfunctional is an UNDERSTATEMENT! The stakes just keeps getting higher and Kate is confronting bigger and more powerful beings. Man, the action in this book is top notch. There are so many moments where I don’t even know if Kate and Curran would come out of it alive. “Don’t die on me, you stupid sonovabitch. You goddamn fucking idiot. I told you to stay out of the damn fight! Why the hell don’t you ever listen? I fucking hate you. […]

Review: Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels #3) by Ilona Andrews

“I was conceived, born, raised and trained with one purpose in mind: to become the best killer I could be. It’s what I do.” There are two things that I was curious about coming into this series. One, I wanted to know why Kate Daniels is so universally beloved by readers. Two, I wanted to know why the Curran-and-Kate pairing was deemed the OTP by so many who loved the series. It becomes readily apparent why Kate and Curran are so loved by so many as the series progress. By the third book, I’m now a certified Kate Daniels evangelist. Yes! I love Kate’s character. She is one of my favorite heroines ever, if not my ultimate favorite. You just can’t help but love her character! If you look up “badass” in the dictionary, her picture would be in there. She’s brave, resourceful, and so hilarious. She’s also very relatable. […]

Review: Magic Burns (Kate Daniels #2) by Ilona Andrews

When I started reading this series October of last year, I had no idea the impact it would bring to my reading life. Sounds a bit melodramatic, no? But I’m not the type of reader who binge on a series. I just don’t have the disposition for it. I get so bored easily that bingeing on a long series is nearly impossible. Or so I thought until this series. And if there was a moment in the book where everything clicked for me, it would be this hilarious exchange between Curran and Kate: “Not only will you sleep with me, but you will say ‘please.’” I stared at him, shocked. The smile widened. “You will say ‘please’ before and ‘thank you’ after.” Nervous laughter bubbled up. “You’ve gone insane. All that peroxide in your hair finally did your brain in, Goldilocks.” The romance between these two won’t be realized until […]

Review: The Proposition by AM Salinger

Review This was a book I picked up based solely on the blurb. One, I love a good friends-to-lovers story, and this promised me one. Two, I enjoy reading m/m. I don’t read a lot of it and I’m picky but then again, the blurb really got me excited. Wade and Rhys are best friends and business partners. Rhys however has been in love with Wade for a long time. The problem he doesn’t know about his feelings nor does he know that Rhys is gay. This was a great set up that got me really excited. Unfortunately, the execution was disappointing. Look, I don’t mind lots of sex in my book but not at the expense of the story. The Proposition had plenty of sexy times, too much in fact that the characters barely interacted with each other outside of the bedroom. There were no character developments or meaningful […]

Review: Hot Asset by Lauren Layne

There are certain things readers expect when reading a Lauren Layne book: a sweet romance between two beautiful, buff hero and heroine set in a New York that’s entirely too clean and too white. I used to devour Lauren Layne’s books. I think she writes smart heroines and dashing heroes, and her stories makes you feel good. But these past few releases have been ho-hum to say the least. It’s set in the same world as before with the same characters just with different names, almost identical jobs. I usually don’t mind it but then the story started to sound the same. Heck, I can’t even remember the names of the hero and heroine in this book without checking the book description. Ian and Lara, by the way but they could have been Jane and Joe from two books prior but I really can’t remember anymore. It’s all a blur. […]

Review: Scoring the Player’s Baby by Naima Simone

Review One of the things that I really like about Naima Simone’s books are her characters. She writes hot-as-sin heroes and gorgeous, accomplished heroines. Scoring the Player’s Baby is no different. It’s a fun, sexy read with a lot of heart. “I’ll give you whatever you ask for. Use me in any way you need to erase those shadows in your eyes.” Ronin Palamo is living a life most men could only dream of. He’s playing for a championship caliber team and he doesn’t lack female companionship. He has it all. But it doesn’t take long for readers to notice that Ronin is hiding a deep wound. One that makes him wary of love and relationship. He doesn’t want it or need it. Or so he thought. His resolve was tested when he meets Kim Matloc. Like Ronin, Kim is hiding wounds of her own. She was cheated on by […]

June Wrap Up

What an awesome month June turned out to be for me. I managed to finally shake off the lingering book slump I’ve been feeling for the past year or so, and this month is evidence of that. I had some misses and a DNF but overall, June was a great month. Check out my reviews below and see if there’s anything in particular that you liked to add on your TBR. Also, if you’ve read some of these books, comment whether you liked/loved them or not below!

Review: It Takes Two by Jenny Holiday

Jenny Holiday is a new to me author that I started reading a couple of months ago. Her new series, Bridesmaids Behaving Badly centers around a group of friends who are bridesmaids in each other’s weddings. I really liked the first book in the series, One and Only, and of the standout characters I enjoyed in the book was Jane’s best friend, Wendy and her unrequited feelings for Jane’s older brother Noah. It Takes Two is their story. And let me tell you: I swooned and cried and smiled all the way because this book was fabulous. “Was this what being in love was like—being in a musical?” It Takes Two has everything I want in my romance: Firstly, it features a stubborn, prickly heroine who is hiding a soft gooey center. Wendy has abandonment issues and a slew of other issues that made me want to give her a […]
